Material Navigator
CEA Systems supplies a set of programs optimizing and verifying the design of pressure vessels, heat exchangers and columns according to the most applied design codes.
Fulfilling the requirements for these design codes depends in all cases on material properties. In most cases these materials and material properties are associated with their design codes.
Finding and selecting the correct materials and material characteristics applicable for designs in different standards is for the engineers a time consuming task. Also checking the right strength values against design temperature and material thickness is the most important job in the complete design process of a pressure vessel.
The Material Navigator is developed for helping engineers with this important job. It can prevent mistakes and optimize designs by selecting the correct materials for its application.
Material Navigator covers materials for the following standards:
- ASME Boiler a Pressure Vessel Code, section VIII div I & division II
- EN13445 part 3 Pressure Vessels
- EN13480 part 3 Piping
- AD Merkblater 2000
- Codap 95 and Codap 2000
- PD 5500, Unfired fusion welded pressure vessels
- Dutch rules for pressure vessels (RToD)
Material Navigator has the following features:
- Extensive material database with over 2000 materials including: carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, aluminum, etc.
- Material characteristics categorized to application purpose in different groups for plate and sheet, tubes, forgings, fittings, bolting, etc.
- Print sheet of material characteristics can be shown in a graphical interface or print out
- Easy and user friendly interface
- Available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, etc.
Material Navigator gives you the option to:
- Create, develop and maintain your own material databases
- Navigate efficiently through all implemented materials and material characteristics
- Copy and paste materials and material characteristics
- Check materials through a graphic interface
- Detect the impact of changed design conditions on the material characteristics immediately
- Select equivalent material for different design codes
- View material properties in both imperial and SI units
- Prevent mistakes by a user-friendly input of materials
- Detect immediately whether a material is applicable or not
- Find the right materials through a search option
- Select allowable stresses automatically in relation to material properties and design temperature
- Generate a plot and show the material characteristics graphically
Material Navigator shows the following material properties and characteristics:
- Material name and number (Werkstof- or steel number) as specified in the material specification
- Material Groups (EN13445). (Materials are grouped according to EN13445-2 Annex A.1 and Annex A.2. This has impact on the fabrication, but related to the design code this also tells you the maximum thickness you are allowed to use depending on the material standard and the group)
- Chemical composition of the material, very important information for welding
- Material density, applicable for a total weight calculation of a pressure vessel
- Elongation is given in the elongation table and can be shown both numeric as in a graph, related to temperature and wall thickness
- Elasticity can be shown â??Design Codeâ?? specific from different materials
Yield Stress, both 0.2% or 1% yield stresses can be shown both numeric as in a graph - Creep values for 10.000, 100.000 and 200.000 hours.
- Through the material database editor materials could be add or properties could be edited
- View the material properties through the use of plots representing the Young's modulus, the expansion coefficient, the Rm, Re/Rp related to the material thickness.
- Warning message when you select a material for which the maximum temperature in the standard is lower than the design temperature Rm, Re, Cr is not defined at design temperature.
- User definable factors for allowable stress calculations
- Graphs for the Yield Stress, Tensile Stress, Youngâ??s modulus and Thermal Expansion Coefficient an extra button is added to show a graph for the entire temperature range for the given wall thickness.
- An extra edit box (and material property), should display if the selected material properties are from the Material specification, or if they where calculated using the Design Code.
The Material Navigator is a part of our software solution for pressure vessel engineering which covers the following design standards:
- ASME Boiler an Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII div I & division II
- EN13445 part 3 Pressure Vessels
- EN13480 part 3 Piping
- Codap 95 and Codap 2000
- Dutch rules for pressure vessels (RToD)
